BANGKOK, April 11 (TNA) - The death toll from road accidents on Monday, the fourth day of the Songkran holiday (April 10) was 28 while 491 persons were injured, bringing the number of road fatalities from April 7-10 to 138 with 1,751 persons injured, said Interior Minister Kongsak Wanthana.In his capacity as Deputy Director of Thailand's road safety campaign, Aif Chief Marshal Kongsak said that there were 414 accidents on April 10.The major cause of accidents is drunken driving, accounting for 26 per cent of the total followed by driving at excessive speeds at 15.7 per cent.Motorcycles are involved in most road accidents with 84 per cent, followed by pick-up trucks account for 9 per cent and less than 2 per cent for private cars. Most accidents happened on highways between 4pm and 8pm.On April 10, the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima recorded the highest death toll of six, followed by three in Bangkok and two in Saraburi.On the same day, the number of most injuries was recorded in Nakhon Ratchasima with 29 people injured while the northern province of Chiang Rai had 23 people injured, followed by 17 in Phangnga and 16 in Chiang Mai.Marshal Kongsak said the most 56 accidents recorded was in Chiang Rai, while Nakhon Ratchasima reported the highest death toll with nine, followed by eight in Songkhla and five in Chiang Mai.But Chiang Rai reported the most injuries with 67 of the total of 1,751 nationwide from April 7-10, followed by Bangkok with 59, and Chiang Mai with 53.
