High pH Therapy

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with numbers below 7 representing an acidic (low oxygen) condition and above 7 representing an alkaline, or oxygenated, condition.

When cesium is taken up by cancer cells, it raises the pH, or oxygen content, of the cell.

The cells that die are absorbed and eliminated by the body.

Cesium has been used to raise the pH of the body as an alternative or complementary cancer treatment or therapy for breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, skin cancer, ovarian cancer, stomach cancer, cervical cancer, brain cancer, kidney cancer, testicular cancer, bone cancer, throat cancer, thyroid cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, cancers of the bladder and gallbladder, metastatic melanoma, and cancers in animals including feline, canine, and equine cancer.

Keith Brewer, Otto Warburg, and H.E.Sartori all contributed to the concept of high pH therapy.

Alkaline Diet

The internal environment of our bodies is maintained at a pH of just about 7.0. This means our internal environment is alkaline. Maintenance of this state is a dynamic, not static, process mediated moment to moment by numerous reactions that produce acid products. Our internal chemical equilibrium is primarily controlled by our lungs, kidneys, intestines, and skin. For necessary reactions and functions to occur, our body must maintain a proper pH. Adequate alkaline reserves are necessary for optimal pH adjustment. The body needs oxygen, water, and acid-buffering minerals to accomplish the pH buffering, while also briskly eliminating waste products.

When an alkaline environment is maintained in the body, metabolic, enzymatic, immunologic, and repair mechanisms function at their best. The acid-forming metabolics of stress and inflammation and of high fat and high protein foods are adequately and effectively neutralized only when sufficient mineral-buffering reserves are present. Mineral-buffering reserves are the gift that alkaline-forming foods give to our body. A diet that is predominantly alkaline-forming is essential to the maintenance of sustained health. More:

DETERMINATION OF OXIDATION TYPE BY MEANS OF TISSUE ELECTROLYTE RATIOS

by Dr. Lawrence Wilson
(first published in the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine, Vol. 1, #2, 1986)

A method of determining oxidation types by means of hair tissue mineral ratios was evaluated by reviewing 55 patient files. Correlations were assessed between tissue calcium/potassium, sodium/magnesium, and sodium/potassium ratios, and nine signs and symptoms of oxidation type. Hair mineral ratios were found to be good predictors of signs and symptoms of oxidation type. More:

THE DANGERS OF TOXIC METALS

by Dr. Lawrence Wilson
Toxic metals comprise a group of minerals that have no known function in the body and in fact are harmful. Today mankind is exposed to the highest levels of these metals in recorded history, thanks to their industrial use and burning of coal, petroleum and incineration of waste material. They affect everyone and are a major cause of illness, aging and even genetic defects.
The study of toxic metals is part of nutrition and toxicology, areas not emphasized in medical schools. For this reason, these important causes of disease are accorded little attention in conventional mainstream medicine. This article focuses on the extent of toxic metal problems ≠ sources of toxic metals, symptoms and how to remove them.

Sauna Detox Benefits

kamarani

Heating of the tissues enhances metabolic processes. Greater cellular energy production facilitates healing. Viruses, tumors and toxin-laden cells are weaker than normal cells. They tolerate heat poorly. Raising the body temperature causes infections to heal more quickly. Hyperthermia or fever therapy help combat infections and even cancer. Our bodies develop fever when ill to enhance metabolism and help kill germs.

Saunas enhance circulation and oxygenate the tissues. They open the nasal passages and assist the sinuses to drain. A major eliminative organ, most people's skin is very inactive. Many do not sweat. This may be due to synthetic or tight clothing that does not breathe. Sedentary living and sun damage also inactivate the skin. Hundreds of chemicals affect the skin from lotions, soaps, creams and deodorants. Other are cleaning solvents, detergent residues and chemicals from bathing water.
Repeated use of the sauna slowly restores skin elimination. Toxic chemicals and metals can be removed faster than with any other method. It is a daily habit that pays many dividends. Steam baths, sweat lodges, vigorous exercise and hot tubs are more extreme and less effective.

Less Exercise Raises Cholesterol Levels in Young Women

How your body reacts to stress may increase your risk of high cholesterol levels. Not surprisingly, a lack of exercise -- particularly among young women -- can have the same effect, according to a new study.
Researchers analyzed health information from some 5,000 patients participating in the 22-year Minnesota Heart Survey. The report was good news for older adults who had lower cholesterol levels than 20 years ago, although scientists speculated those health gains were thanks to statins, dangerous and completely unnecessary drugs.
Cholesterol levels rose, however, for one significant age group: Women ages 25-34. And, exercise -- not obesity -- was the culprit, according to researchers.
The good news is you can normalize your cholesterol levels easily by making two simple lifestyle changes:
Retooling your diet to reduce, with the plan of eliminating, grains and sugars.
Starting an exercise program, with an emphasis on daily cardiovascular training.

Chlorophyll for MS?

Chlorophyll for MS?
Provided by: DrWeil.com

Q: I was recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and have been taking chlorophyll supplements to boost my immune system. Is this wise, or should I be more cautious about chlorophyll? -- Linda F.

A: Chlorophyll, the green pigment that gives plants their color, has no function in the human body. That fact hasn't stopped marketers from promoting supplements containing chlorophyll and suggesting that it can benefit patients with conditions ranging from cancer to arthritis to Multiple sclerosis (MS). Chlorophyll can't hurt, but it isn't an immune booster, and I don't know of any research suggesting that it helps patients with MS.

Unfortunately, we know little about what causes MS and what factors influence its progression and outcome. It begins with localized inflammatory damage to the myelin sheaths surrounding nerve fibers due to an attack by the immune system. This interferes with nerve impulses and can lead to symptoms such as muscle weakness, loss of vision, and a variety of other impairments.

A drug called beta-interferon has become the conventional treatment for MS patients. While it can slow the progression of the disease, it is expensive and produces unpleasant side effects. Whether or not you take beta-interferon, you can try to influence the course of the disease with the stress reduction, mind/body treatments and lifestyle changes recommended below:
Decrease protein intake toward 10 percent of daily calories, and emphasize plant rather than animal protein.

Eliminate milk and milk products, substituting other calcium sources.
Eat organically grown fruits and vegetables as well as organic products made from wheat and soy.
Eliminate polyunsaturated vegetable oils, margarine, vegetable shortening, all partially hydrogenated oils, foods (such as deep-fried foods) that might contain trans-fatty acids. Use extra-virgin olive oil as your main fat.

Increase intake of omega-3 fatty acids from fish, walnuts, or flax and hemp seeds.
Eat more fruits and vegetables, preferably organic.
Eat ginger. Turmeric can also be helpful. (I recommend the product called Turmeric Force from New Chapter.)
Take Acidophilus culture and psyllium if constipation is a problem, or use the ayurvedic herbal bowel regulator, triphala.

Take my antioxidant and daily multivitamin formula plus an additional B-50 complex vitamin daily.
Take 5 grams of soy lecithin granules daily (store in the refrigerator).
Take 30 milligrams of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ-10) two or three times a day.
Do some kind of light aerobic exercise on a regular basis. Choose something you enjoy; don't push yourself to the point of exhaustion.
Try visualization, meditation, and hypnotherapy to redirect your mental energies in positive directions.
Experiment with traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine from qualified practitioners.
Ashwaganda, an Ayurvedic herb may be helpful. Finally, talk to a Chinese medical practitioner about the use of bee sting therapy, which has helped in many cases.

Exercise Before Eating to Fight Fatty Foods?

Exercise Before Eating to Fight Fatty Foods?
Provided by: DrWeil.com

Q: I'm usually pretty good about avoiding fatty foods, but the holidays do me in. Is there any way I can minimize the damage? --Mark D.

A: Actually, there may be. New research suggests that getting some exercise before eating a big holiday-type meal can be protective. Results of a small study published in the December 21, 2004 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology showed that a long walk before a rich meal can reduce the potentially harmful effects of eating fatty foods on blood vessel function.

Earlier studies have shown that high-fat meals can temporarily elevate triglycerides and even impair the functioning of the endothelium, the lining of blood vessels.
Researchers at the University of Glasgow in Scotland tried two combinations of exercise and big meals to investigate the impact on triglyceride levels and blood vessel function. First, they asked the 20 men participating to walk on a treadmill at a moderate pace for 90 minutes before eating. The men then skipped exercise for a day and had another big meal (in both cases the food included whipped cream, chocolate and 80 grams of fat).

Blood vessel function declined after both fatty meals, but there was less of a decrease when the men exercised before eating. The researchers speculated that the exercise may have helped counter the effects of the meal by lowering blood fat levels and giving fat particles less of a chance to interact with blood vessel walls or by boosting blood flow, an effect that can last for hours.

Half the men in the study were obese and half were normal weight.
I wouldn't use exercise to justify indulging in high-fat foods very often - as these results show, even when you put in 90 minutes on a treadmill, the effect on blood vessel function is still negative. If this happens too often, the long-term consequences for your cardiovascular system can't be good. Enjoy a good walk before your holiday meal and then get back to healthy eating.
Happy holidays.

How Do You Define Happiness?

How Do You Define Happiness?
Provided by: DrWeil.com

Q: A friend and I recently argued about the nature of happiness. We concluded that for most people, being happy is an occasional feeling that can't be sustained over time -- no matter how fortunate you are. What do you think? -- Max

A: (During this Holiday Week, DrWeil.com is presenting the Editor's Picks of seasonal Questions & Answers from the "Ask Dr. Weil" Q&A Library. The following was originally published 05/02/2000.)

You ask a very broad, almost unanswerable question. So, rather than tackle it myself, I'm going to suggest you read a remarkable book on the subject, The Art of Happiness, by the Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cutler (a psychiatrist here in Arizona). The book is based on a series of conversations between the two men.

The opening line comes from an address by the Dalai Lama: "I believe that the very purpose of our life is to seek happiness." He goes on to examine the elements that go into making happiness possible: good health, the wealth or material things we accumulate, and fulfilling relationships. However, His Holiness explains that none of this will produce happiness if your mental attitude is negative. "If you harbor hateful thoughts or intense anger somewhere deep down within yourself, then it ruins your health...if you are mentally unhappy or frustrated, then physical comfort is not of much help."

His Holiness is right -- anger has real health consequences. A new study, published in the medical journal Circulation, found that a person who is prone to anger is about three times more likely to have a heart attack or sudden cardiac death than someone who is not as angry. The Dalai Lama adds, "As long as there is a lack of the inner discipline that brings calmness of mind, none of the external facilities or conditions you have will give you the feeling of joy and happiness that you are seeking."

Those words of wisdom may sound simplistic, but in reading the book you will find a fascinating and nuanced discussion of what happiness is and how we can all achieve it. Cutler has amplified the Dalai Lama's philosophy with findings from scientific studies, as well as cases from his own practice. For example, after a discussion with His Holiness about the differences between happiness and pleasure, Cutler tells of a patient who couldn't decide whether to move from a hot, crowded city to a small town that she loved. The problem was that she loved her job in the city and didn't think she would enjoy the one she had been offered in the small town. Cutler asked whether the move would bring her happiness or pleasure. That question made the decision easier for her -- the move might bring her pleasure, but she decided she would be happier if she stayed in the city.

This book can give you an entirely different outlook on happiness and how to achieve it. I recommend it highly.

How Do You Connect with Others?

How Do You Connect with Others?
Provided by: DrWeil.com

Q: I've been going on and off your 8-week program (My Optimum Health Plan) all year, always finding myself stuck on the Week 7 project about volunteerism and "giving of self." I figure if I'm going to do it at all, now is the time. How do I start? -- Anonymous

A: First of all, congratulations on making the 8-week program part of your whole year. You certainly should feel good about what you've done so far. I'm not surprised to hear that volunteering has become your biggest challenge. In order to achieve optimum health, it's not enough just to eat well, exercise and take supplements. Human beings are social animals, and we need to recognize and honor our connectedness. Unless we experience connection to others in a meaningful way, I believe we put ourselves at risk of developing spiritual, mental and, ultimately, physical illness.

We all need to develop our awareness of how we are connected, especially those of us who tend to take our blessings for granted. I recommend incorporating some kind of service work into your weekly or monthly routine. Doing service work puts the needs of others ahead of your own, and that does good both for you and the people you're helping. How do you start? Make the commitment to yourself and then make the first phone call.

Donating money is one way of helping, but it's not as useful to your own well-being as going out there and giving of yourself, especially in a way that draws on your own unique talents or skills. Big opportunities in my community every year include feeding the homeless; helping people with AIDS or other terminal illnesses; and helping to clean up the environment. One of my rituals is to go through my closets every year and gather items to give to Goodwill - items I know other people will be able to use and appreciate.

If you don't feel that you want to get involved with an organization, you can always do things on your own, such as helping shut-ins, offering transportation to elderly or disabled neighbors and tutoring or reading to children. The possibilities are endless. Something I do that's purely personal is to give people in desperate situations free medical consultations. Also, you needn't give of yourself only to strangers - help out friends and family members.

It's easy to become overwhelmed by the amount of suffering in the world and all the people and causes in need of help. Recognize that you can only do so much and that sometimes helping just one person does a world of good. Prioritize: Think about your interests and pick an activity that you feel is most deserving of your time and energy. But whatever form your service work takes, once you take that first step I'm sure you'll find it will quickly become one of your more rewarding healthy habits.

Giving Blood Too Often?

Giving Blood Too Often?

Provided by: DrWeil.com

Q: Is it safe and healthy for a fit and healthy person to donate plasma weekly? -- Michelle N. A: Plasma is the cell-free part of blood that helps maintain our circulatory volume and supplies proteins needed for blood clotting and immunity. Donated plasma usually is used to control bleeding, often among burn victims and newborn babies in critical condition. It is also given to patients with leukemia, those who have had organ transplants, as well as to some in treatment for heart disease.
Donating plasma is a bit more time-consuming than giving whole blood: the plasma itself is removed from whole blood via a separation process called plasma apheresis. Here's the way it works: after blood is drawn in the usual way via a needle placed in your arm, it goes into a centrifuge that separates out the plasma. Concentrated blood cells and platelets are then returned to your body. The procedure takes about 15 to 20 minutes longer than a regular blood donation.
Your body replenishes any plasma you donate in 48 hours so it is considered safe to give more as soon as two days after a first donation. However, the American Red Cross limits plasma donations to 12 a year, so you're better off donating once a month rather than once a week. Some blood centers impose longer waiting times between donations.
Anyone eligible to donate whole blood is eligible to donate plasma. The Red Cross requires all donors to be healthy, at least 17 years old, and weigh at least 110 pounds. If you have a chronic disease, you're considered eligible to give blood as long as you're being treated and you feel well. If you've been taking certain medications, you may be asked to wait a while before becoming a donor.
If you or someone you know has been donating plasma or whole blood, I applaud you. Although there is an urgent need for blood, only five percent of Americans donate in any given year. Giving blood is safe, it is easy and, as the Red Cross says, it is the right thing to do. (Incidentally, because it lowers iron levels, it may also be the healthy thing to do. Lower iron correlates with lower risks of both heart disease and cancer.)
